Last season's beaten Champions League finalists Bayern Munich got their new campaign under way with a deserved 2-1 win over Valencia.

Bastian Schweinsteiger fired the hosts into the lead seven minutes before half-time and Toni Kroos doubled their advantage with a sweet strike from outside the area with 14 minutes remaining.

The visitors had offered very little in an attacking sense but were given hope in stoppage time when Nelson Valdez headed home Jonathan Viera's cross, but within a minute Adil Rami was sent off for bringing down Arjen Robben in the box and despite Diego Alves saving Mario Mandzukic's penalty, there was not time for Valencia to launch another attack.
