Greek football club Olympiakos Volos was thrown out of European club competitions for three years, the penalty can be extended to five years, the official site of UEFA.

The punishment of the team from Volos comes after it was proven that the team has participated in matches arranged by the Greek Championship.

The decision of the disciplinary committee of UEFA has been taken at a meeting on Wednesday. From the Greek club have until Monday, August 15 to appeal the sentence.

From UEFA also said it would officially define who is an opponent of France Paris Saint-Germain in the playoff round of the UEFA Cup. Parisians had to face Olympiakos on 18 and 25 August.

"Olympiacos Volou FC have been excluded from this season's UEFA Europa League and given a further three-year ban from UEFA competition, deferred for a probationary period of five seasons, after breaching Article 5 of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations," said a statement.

"The Greek club have until midnight CET on Monday 15 August to submit an appeal under Article 49 of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations.

"The UEFA administration will decide which club will replace Olympiacos Volou in the UEFA Europa League, where they were scheduled to face Paris Saint-Germain FC in the play-offs on 18 and 25 August."
