Mbia rescues a draw for Sevilla

Substitute Stephane Mbia scored in the last minute to salvage a 2-2 draw for 10-man Sevilla at Europa League Group G opponents Rijeka.

The defending champions were unbeaten in the group stage last year and things looked to be following a familiar pattern when Iago Aspas put them ahead in the 26th minute.

But Thimothee Kolodzieczak's red card five minutes into the second half set them back, Andrej Kramaric and Zoran Kvrzic both on target before Mbia snatched a point at the death.

Jose Antonio Reyes almost put the visitors ahead with just five minutes on the clock, letting fly from inside the area only for Ivan Vargic to make a fine save.

Vargic was again in the way when Grzegorz Krychowiak took aim from 20 yards but Rijeka could not hold out indefinitely as Sevilla dictated the pace.

It took 25 minutes for Aspas to make the breakthrough, the home defence sitting too deep to defend a long throw and allowing the Liverpool loanee to get into the area and stroke home left-footed.

There were no further goals in the first period, Sevilla struggling to piece together another chance of note and Matej Mitrovic heading over the top when Rijeka finally created something just before the interval.

The tone shifted when Kolodzieczak felled Kramaric in the area, seeing red and conceding a penalty which the attacker got up to convert.

Unai Emery made a double substitution - Mbia's arrival among the changes - and reshuffled but Rijeka moved ahead with 65 minutes gone.

Kramaric was again involved, getting on the end of a long ball upfield and cutting back for Kvrzic, whose deflected effort skipped over Antonio Beto.

With the numbers in their favour, the Croatian side dominated for the remainder of the match though wasteful shooting and a Beto save from Magalhaes Moises kept the lead at one.

Mbia then made them pay, arriving from midfield to convert Benoit Tremoulinas' left-wing cross.
